Brexit has led to lower investment but the effects on employment are less clear. We find that the Brexit process has had a negative impact on the investment decisions of companies in the UK in the three years since the referendum. The impact on employment has been more ambiguous. The UK investment funds that minimise Brexit risk - and some that could gain from maximising it. We study the impact of the 2016 Brexit referendum on UK foreign direct investment. Using the synthetic control method to construct appropriate counterfactuals, we show that by March 2019 the Leave vote had led to a 17% increase in the number of UK outward investment transactions in the remaining EU27 member states, whereas transactions in non-EU OECD countries were unaffected. UK investments make up just 1.4% of its portfolio with the rest of Europe accounting for another 4%. Its investments are geared toward technology and over 70% of its investments are in the US and Canada.
